Designers and Decorators

Designers and Decorators

A frequent question we are asked is what is the difference between a career in interior design and being a decorator? On Dear Alice this week, Jess and Suz explore common misconceptions and discuss the two professions. To listen to the podcast, check it out here

There are many differences between the two, but it is important to be able to do both to be a successful interior designer. Becoming an interior designer involves going through four years of University, learning how to use autoCAD, creating construction documents, knowing how to read finish schedules, and learning a lot of technicality. Decorators have an eye or skill for design and know what furnishings and styles go well together. They excel at creating a beautiful final layer, adding furniture, artwork, rugs, and accessories to a room. Each profession is distinct, but having both the knowledge of an interior designer and the eye of a decorator make the perfect combination.

Another commonly asked question is if designers push their own styles. This is definitely not true, the job of a designer is to help clients achieve their vision. A designer should nudge their client out of their comfort zone, helping find styles, colors, and pieces that accentuate their personality and vision, but should not push a cookie-cutter design.
