The Lamp Guide: Why Your Lighting Is the Most Underrated Design Decision You Make

Picture the room with a beautiful sofa, the perfect rug, and stunning artwork, yet, something is off. The room that looks good in photographs, but feels flat in real life. We see it all the time, the culprit is often the lighting. A single ceiling light flattens a room, everything is equally illuminated, which means nothing is interesting. The warmth, the depth, the feeling that someone lives here and cares, that comes from lamps.

Light source height is everything. Overhead lighting comes from above, the same angle as midday sun, which is why it makes interiors feel institutional. Table lamps and floor lamps bring light to eye level and below. That shift in source height is what creates the warm, layered atmosphere of a room that genuinely feels good to be in.

The base of a lamp is a sculptural object. A marble column. A faceted crystal form. A hand-turned ceramic. On a console or bedside table, that base is as present and considered as any other decorative object, and it performs a function that a vase cannot. This is why we designed the Frances Crystal Table Lamp, and why we chose Calacatta Viola marble for the base of the Athena Lamp. The lamp is not supporting the room. It is part of it.

The Four Lamp Categories

The Table Lamp 

The table lamp belongs on consoles, side tables, sideboards, dressers, and nightstands. When selecting one, think about the base material, the base height relative to the table surface, the shade material, and bulb temperature.

For formal surfaces and consoles where sculptural presence is the point, the Frances Crystal Table Lamp is the one. For surfaces that need material weight, the Athena Lamp in Calacatta Viola gives the luxury of marble. For a narrower surface or a more delicate moment, the Winnie Crystal Table Lamp catches light beautifully without overwhelming a smaller space.

The Accent Lamp

Accent lamps are smaller in scale: like the Penny Lamp or the Perla Lamp. They live on shelves, nightstands, bathroom counters, and bar carts, anywhere a full table lamp would overwhelm. They don't provide task light. They provide atmosphere, fill, and the sense that every surface in a room has been considered.

The Penny Lamp was designed exactly for this: a small, beautiful lamp that works under cabinetry, on kitchen shelves, on a secretary desk, or tucked into any small area that needs warmth without scale. We think of it as the finishing detail that separates a decorated room from a designed one.

The Sconce

Sconces are the most architectural lamp category. They require installation, but they deliver a quality of light and visual interest that no table lamp can fully replicate. They are particularly powerful flanking a bed, in hallways, on either side of a fireplace, or wherever floor space is too limited for a table.

The Amelia Sconce reads like jewelry on the wall, it works in bathrooms, bedrooms, and entryways. The Hollis Vanity Sconce was designed specifically for bathroom vanities where overhead fixtures are insufficient and a beautifully lit mirror matters. The Single Maude Sconce in Red is for rooms that want personality, an unexpected color choice that brings warmth and a confident point of view to hallways, reading nooks, and bedrooms.

The Three-Layer Formula

Every well-lit room uses at least three light sources at different heights and with different purposes.

The ambient layer is your overhead source, an existing fixture or chandelier, set on a dimmer.

The task layer is one or two table lamps on the primary working or reading surfaces. These are doing the functional work: light where you need it, at a height that doesn't strain.

The accent layer is smaller lamps, sconces, or rechargeable options that add fill light, visual interest, and the sense of depth that makes a room feel like a room rather than a set.
